If you’ve recently thought about quitting your job, you are far from alone. Employers are experiencing turn over like never before, especially in the hospitality industry. You may have seen media describe this phenomenon as the “Great Resignation” and there is no sign of it slowing down. In 2021, April, July, and August each set records for the amount of people who left their jobs. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2.9% of the entire workforce quit their jobs in August alone.
Pundits attribute this exodus to people feeling like they are not valued at work or don’t have a sense of belonging. The COVID pandemic seems to have been a catalyst for people to reassess their priorities. They realize they prefer to work from home or are no longer willing to accept working environments they previously tolerated, in addition to continued COVID concerns and lack of childcare options.
What does that mean for you?
If you are actively job hunting, you are up against a larger than usual candidate pool. Some key actions to ensure you stand out:
- Make sure your collateral – your resume, LinkedIn profile, interview answers — is current and shows your best value.
- Recognize and be able to articulate to potential employers your transferable skills.
- Keep your network warm and stay in regular touch with all your contacts.
- Have a year’s worth of expenses saved if you are quitting your current job and be prepared for a months-long job search.
If you are considering quitting your current job, ask yourself if you truly need to leave in this moment. Some things to think about:
- Would you consider staying if you could alter/enhance your job description so that you like it more? Your employer might be open to adding responsibilities you would enjoy.
- Can you develop better relationships with your colleagues or view your job in a way that adds meaning and purpose?
- Are your expectations realistic? Research positions you’re interested in very carefully and clarify your goals and values to ensure a good match with a prospective employer; you may be better off staying where you are.
- Could your frustration be related to the pandemic? You may be burnt out and just need some real time off to recharge, with your work email notifications turned firmly off!
- Can you invest more free time in your hobbies and interests to create a more robust self-image, where your identity isn’t tied only to your work?
