When searching for a career, one of the key components to success is having a well thought out game plan. Just like in sports, having the right strategy can keep you in the game and help you come out on top.
Here’s the formula according to Glassdoors.com.
Start with a goal, then work your way to it.
Think of your goal as the big picture. You want to win the game, but, in order to do that, you need to break down that goal into smaller objectives. Each objective you accomplish leads you closer to reaching your original goal. So, if your end goal is working as a retail manager, start off by looking for a job as a sales associate. Once you succeed in that position, you can move closer to your vision of career success.
Determine what skills you need
A football player In the NFL would not apply for a position in the NBA unless he can sink a 3-pointer. How do you know what skills you need for your desired position? Do your homework. Research jobs related to your career choice and determine what qualifications you’ll need. If your research shows your skills lacking in a certain area, you know what you need to work on. Top players of the game are always working to increase their know-how.
Track your successes and failures
As a former football and wrestling coach, I was trained to keep track of my successes and failures in order to make adjustments moving forward. Tracking achievements like landing an interview or attending a networking event can help move you toward your goals and objectives. When obstacles get in your way, view the situation as an opportunity to learn from mistakes and make improvements.
Keep playing to win
Be confident. Stay focused. The game plan will work if you keep your eye on the prize. No matter how rough the ride gets, you must stick to your goal and objectives. Make sure to recognize opportunities that can put you on the path to a successful career. Following through on all leads and sticking to the game plan is a recipe for a success.
Accomplishments can be difficult without proper preparation. Recognizing the importance of a game plan, and being disciplined enough to follow it can be a game changer in terms of true career success.
